3 out of 5 stars ATHLETE'S READ THIS FIRST   March 16, 2010
fandangokb (Venice Beach, CA)
Why buy an entire gym worth of weights when you can get them all in one package? That's what I thought too when I bought these for my upcoming P90X routine. The design is super cool and will fit almost anywhere in your house or apartment so convenient storage is not really an issue. The issue is comes with durability and basic functionality. If you are already in good shape, or you know what, even if you're not but you want to move quickly between your work outs you may find this weight set absolutely maddening. I've had them for 3 weeks and they've "malfunctioned" twice already costing me huge chunks of time out of my work out. You cannot quickly switch from weight to weight because the weights have to be delicately and perfectly set back into the base or something my pop out of place. When that happens its nothing short of a HUGE B**** to get them back in place. Generally, I'm glad I got them. They do exactly what they're supposed to do, but if you're really trying to work hard from set to set, you'll find them frustrating as you have to stop and slowly put them back, dial in your weight carefully and then go on to the next thing. I have a sinking feeling this product won't last in the long run, but they are an excellent short term solution.

5 out of 5 stars Met expectations   March 15, 2010

I ordered these Dumbbells for my son, who had seen them on Amazon.com. These were a gift for his 21st birthday. He LOVES them! They offer him flexibility in adding and subtracting weights that he couldn't get with his other separate dumbbells. For women, it offers flexibility in just "dialing up" the smaller weights also. Plus, since he's in college and living in a house, space is limited. This set is awesome in conserving space. It's obviously an investment, but for the serious athlete or fitness person, it's well worth it.

2 out of 5 stars Why I went with Iron...   March 13, 2010
Kevin R. Sherman
I spent a *long* time researching this and ultimately chose to go with iron dumbbells. It was a hard decision that was finalized when I went to check them out at Dick's Sporting Goods. Simply put, the display models at Dick's didn't work. On one of the dumbbells, the dial didn't turn at all - and on the other, they both turned freely, but no matter what setting you put it on, the same weights were selected when you lifted the bar. I asked the guy at Dick's about that, and he say 'yeah, those things always break within a few weeks of us putting new display models out there.' Now, I realize that display models are *not* well taken care of. I'm sure they get more than normal use/abuse - high school kids, morons, etc. But I've got kids, and my kids have friends, and it would only be a matter of time before someone tried to lift them - and set them down too harshly and then I'd have problems. And once they break, they're unusable.

Right across from the SelectTech's were the iron dumbbells. Not as sexy, not as space efficient, not as cool - but they'll outlast me - and someday I'll be able to hand them down to my son, or donate them, or whatever. I wouldn't even expect the SelectTech's to last 10 years before making their pilgrimage to the curb. And that would be with careful use and treating them well.

Long story short, for about the same amount of money, I can get the same weight variations without the stress of making sure I always treat them gingerly. This was made easier by already having iron dumbbells from 10-25 lbs... so I'm already half way there.

Maybe I'd consider these if I was single, or if space was my biggest concern. Amazon has great racks for storing the iron dumbbells - and while not overflowing with space, I'm not too constrained either.

I made the right decision for me... thank you to everyone that posted their positive and negative feedback. Like I said, this was a tough decision.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Equipment   March 13, 2010
Ryan Zarzecki (Chicago Illinois)
I would have to say, out of the many dumbbells I've used, this is the best one! The weights are durable, and easy to work with. And the best part is when doing strip sets, you can switch the weight fast and effective. Very Happy with this product!

2 out of 5 stars Bowflex gone wrong   March 12, 2010
W. Kipp (NORTH AURORA, IL, US)
I have continued problems getting the weights out of its sleeve and then turning the dial at the end to change weight, at times it will not move or is very tight. I was and am surprised and dissappointed with my purchase. There are times were everything is fine and easy to use which is nice but mostly time consuming trying to get them to work properly. I could not recommend this product.
