Product Description
He watches her from across the crowded dance club, a sensual black-haired stranger who stirs Gabrielle Maxwell’s deepest fantasies. But nothing about this night—or this man—is what it seems. For when Gabrielle witnesses a murder outside the club, reality shifts into something dark and deadly. In that shattering instant she is thrust into a realm she never knew existed—a realm where vampires stalk the shadows and a blood war is set to ignite.

Lucan Thorne despises the violence carried out by his lawless brethren. A vampire himself, Lucan is a Breed warrior, sworn to protect his kind—and the unwitting humans existing alongside them—from the mounting threat of the Rogues. Lucan cannot risk binding himself to a mortal woman, but when Gabrielle is targeted by his enemies, he has no choice but to bring her into the dark underworld he commands.

Here, in the arms of the Breed’s formidable leader, Gabrielle will confront an extraordinary destiny of danger, seduction, and the darkest pleasures of all. . . .

3 out of 5 stars Average and not even crunchy snack read   July 27, 2010
Newfern (Round Rock, TX)
I read this one... last year? And it was so average that I didn't even remember until re-reading the product description and some reviews today. It was entertaining enough, with a typical tall, dark, and broody male lead. But the whole birth-marked, mate-for-life kind of thing seems to force the story in a way it didn't naturally build to.

In the end, I found myself not caring about the characters or the outcome, and certainly not interested enough to read more in the world. Again, it's not bad. It's just... kind of there. Whenever I put it down, I never looked forward to going back.

1 out of 5 stars ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz...   June 15, 2010
Aegis Nod (Smalltown, USA)
The Breed, a race of vampires fighting against the Rogues, has been living alongside humans and the continual struggle to keep their ways as well as keep their world secret is a task for the Breed's best warriors--like Lucan Thorne.

Gabrielle Maxwell, after a great showing of her latest series of artsy photographs, tries to find some happiness in her success but instead is constantly left with the dull ache of loneliness and emptiness that nothing, not even her work, can fill. When she meets the gaze of Lucan in a dark and crowded club, she doesn't expect her entire life to be completely changed. But when witnessing a savage attack by a bunch of Rogues outside the club, and Lucan thrust into the task of removing the memories, he becomes ever more entangled in his need and infatuation for her. For Gabrielle, as she attempts to come to terms with what she witnessed, and in doing so, believes herself to going crazy, just like her mother, she frantically tries to resolve the shadows and thoughts that float in her head. But Lucan knows all too well that Gabrielle is not just any human, but a woman who is gifted with the ability to be of their world, to see beyond the veil of normal humans. As a result, she becomes a risk to Lucan's race, as well as a target of his and his race's enemies. As Rogue forces and a mysterious Master attempt to seek her out for their own agendas, Lucan's sense of protection and something he's refused his whole life--love--forces him to do and consider things he's rejected his whole life.

This is yet another stereotypical, bland, completely unimaginative, cliched, forgettable and dismal addition to the vampire/paranormal/urban fantasy genre. Trying too hard to be cool, Adrian presents a predictable, cheesy and lame, as well incredibly weak plot you've read so often, you'll feel prophetic while reading it. The terminology, world building and the war between the baddies and the goodies wasn't even given a pseudo-different presentation and not at all believable. The Breed are humans with fangs and a weird genesis saga to give it that 'special spin'. On top of that, characterization was so flat, one dimensional and lacking anything remotely fresh or new, and the sex scenes so random and out of the blue that I was put to sleep by the whole thing. Romance, i.e., sex: bleh. Yawn, cringe, ugh. It was like watching paint dry, though I honestly think watching paint dry would have been far more intriguing.

The good reviews (mistakingly) convinced me to stick to it. DON'T BELIEVE THE good REVIEWS! There is absolutely nothing clever, fun or even enjoyable about this book. There is no substance to the plot at all, or any strength to any of the characters, and there was no interesting action of any kind. The comparisons to JR Ward's early books in the BDB series is an insult. In no way was this book even close to the excitement, ingenuity and freshness Ward's series had. Adrian's not a bad writer, but in no way does okay, mediocre writing ability lend itself to storytelling. This was a true disappointment all around.

3 out of 5 stars I've heard these get better, but Lara Adrian is no Nalini Singh   June 10, 2010

Well, I put it down many times, but since I'd heard they eventually get better I decided to finish it before I considering giving them up. What really struck me was the difference in stark, unfinished nature of the world and characters in this book as compared to the lush world-building and opulent spirits of the people in the series I'd just put down. Actually, two series by the same author, Nalini Singh. The characters in Adrian's books are rather two-dimensional in a barely defined world. Singh's world explodes with color, heat, cold, power, scents, and emotion. And oh my god, she can make you cry one minute and reach for the ice water the next. Can't say that about this book, and just couldn't help making the comparison.

I'm going to try and read the entire series, hoping prior reviews of her later books hold true. But for those of you who haven't discovered Nalini Singh, try her two paranormal series Pys/Changling and Guild Hunter. If it's your "thing", you'll never forget them.

1 out of 5 stars Unreadable   June 5, 2010

I don't often write reviews but I consider this a public service. The positive reviews of this book are yet another example of the dumbing down of America. I was not able to finish the book. In the future I'm only reading the negative reviews on Amazon, they're a better indicator of a books worth. To compare this book in a positive way to the Black Dagger Brother Series is an insult to Ward and her fans.

The book is derivative in the worst sense, using only the most superficial aspects of the genre and attempting, but failing, to flesh out a story from it. The meandering plot goes nowhere, the characters are one dimensional, even unlikable and the writing is laughably amateurish. It is too dull to even be considered trashy fun.

In short, I don't recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars My Least Favorite of the Midnight Breed Series Thus Far!   June 5, 2010

I'm about to read the fourth book in the Midnight Breed series; and of them-- this one is my least favorite. The blatant sexuality in this book was over-used. In fact, the scenes were so frequent that the interactions became somewhat meaningless by the end of the book.

In comparing Gabrielle and Lucan with the characters in the novels that follow; Gabrielle and Lucan seem dull and they lack substance. I say skip the first book and go directly to number two!
