Best newborn blanket July 26, 2010 Heidi M. Ballek (Austin, TX) We love these swaddle blankets! They are really easy to use and they keep the newborn's arms snuggled close to his body so that he can't be startled by his little uncoordinated limbs. Babies can easily get out of a regular blanket, even if they are wrapped tightly, and it's more difficult to swaddle with a regular blanket as well. The SwaddleMe is very easy to use. It closes with cute little velcro flaps that look like teddy bear ears. It even has a slit in the back so that you can use it in the car seat! Our little girl screamed in her car seat every time until we figured out we could keep her swaddled in it, and now she stays calm! We have the organic one and a non-organic one (butterflies) and they are about the same, but the organic one is a little bit softer. To get the wrap just right, make sure you line up the top of the swaddle blanket with the baby's shoulders and keep their arms down when you wrap it. Our little girl was 5 lb 13 oz when she was born and this blanket was a little big but still usable by folding down the top and just using one velcro tab. One of my very favorite baby items!
lifesaver!! May 25, 2010 H. K. Robertson (Norfolk, VA United States) I am a mother of 4 and I am wondering why I never knew about this amazing product before? We received the microfleece version of this product before our youngest was born. He was a January baby, so it was perfect! We've since moved on to the cotton-knit and I'm purchasing the organic version today. He's an active 16 lb., 4 month-old baby and we're only just moving on to the large size. He sleeps with a onesie and the swaddler. So simple! No waking up with any sudden movements. Sleeps very soundly. We only use it overnight. I don't want him swaddled tight during the day.
I love that this is very affordable. No question what I give my pregnant friends. This is the best!
Best Swaddling Blanket I've Tried April 9, 2010 J. Finkel (Hoboken, NJ) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the third swaddling blanket I've purchased since arriving home with a newborn 3 weeks ago. The first two were Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe 100% Cotton Flannel, Small, Sage Gingham and Miracle Blanket - Baby Swaddling Blanket - Pink. Of the three, I was very disappointed with the miracle blanket, especially for the price. This organic cotton kiddopotamus is definitely the winner of the three.
The kiddopotamus swaddling blankets all use velcro and are designed very intelligently to allow a very snug swaddle with minimal effort. My wife was not happy about rewrapping the miracle blanket swaddle at 4am after a diaper change. The fact that the kiddopotamus swaddles are so quick to take off and put back on is their best selling point. The 2 velcro tabs on the outside always hold, but I can see as my baby grows, eventually she may be strong enough to free them.
The cotton flannel kiddopotamus is the perfect warmth for most of the year, but probably too hot for summer. This organic cotton seems lighter and more breathable. More noticeable is how much softer the organic cotton is compared to the flannel. I suppose the organic cotton is more similar to the cotton knit (jersey) fabric. It also stretches more, so it's not quite as snug and confining. This could be a plus or a minus given your baby's swaddling preference and size.
Overall, I'd easily recommend this product to anyone with an infant. You may only get a few months use out of the small kiddopotamus swaddles, but 3 months of better sleeping for your baby is priceless. The cost of these is pretty reasonable...especially the non-organic. During the winter you may want to use the cotton flannel or even the microfleece, which I read is the warmest.
Velcro didn't work and cinched around neck!! December 19, 2009 Dawn M. Parker 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
My son is 4 months old and this morning when I went to his room because he was quietly crying, I realized that the 'arms' were cinched around his neck. The velcro hadn't stayed in the middle section and after getting his arms out through the middle portion, the 'arms' were up around his neck. I truly believe that the only reason he's okay, is because he's a little chubby and his chin was in the way. Truly terrifying and the swaddle is now in the garbage.
Best baby item we own July 12, 2009 M. Davidson (seattle) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
Swaddling vs. Not Swaddling
We didn't swaddle our baby for the first week or so, mostly because we couldn't figure it out. It is *not* hard to figure out mind you, but we were slightly overwhelmed and seriously sleep deprived parents. During that week, baby would wake up soon after falling asleep over and over. Once we took five seconds to figure out how to get him into a nice snug swaddle, we experienced our first five hour stretch of sleep (breastfed baby)! Since then, we've tried to put him down without the swaddler, but flailing arms soon wake him up.
Organic Cotton vs. Non-Organic Cotton vs. Bamboo
The non-organic ones have shrunk and toughened. The bamboo is very soft and lightweight, but baby is able to get out of it fairly easily. The organics are my favorite by far because they have kept their shape, size, and softness after daily washings (warm water). Bonus is that they also have cute little bear velcro closures whereas the others do not and organic farming is good for the environment.
I recommend getting a few because if baby spits up on it, it is good to have a dry spare ready to go in the middle of the night.
Our baby sleeps with a diaper and this swaddler. (Summer)
